Exposed to AFFF? - It’s Our Turn to Fight for You

What is aqueous film-forming foam?

Commonly known as Firefighting Foam, Aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), is considered the best method for battling fires. However, that comes with a price to pay. The popular fire-suppressant, which is effective due it’s capabilities to prevent oxygen from getting to the fire, contains what is known as PFAS – perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoic acid. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these chemicals pose serious health risks, including cancers. Sadly, research has shown these substances can enter through groundwater exposing people who live close to AFFF storage facilities.

PFAS creates one of the strongest bonds in organic chemistry. Nicknamed the “forever chemical”, due to their long half-lives, these compounds break down very slowly leaving a long-lasting effect on the environment. Unfortunately, there is no way to determine the length at which these dangerous composites will deteriorate.
