Modesto Woman, 27, Identified as Fatal Victim

Pedro Mendoza Injured in Scotts Valley Crash by Drunk Driver on Highway 20MODESTO (May 1st, 2019)

A woman was killed and a man was seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision on Tuesday morning on Yosemite Boulevard.

The accident took place at the 2400 block of Yosemite at Trask Lane at about 6:50 a.m. when a silver Chevrolet S-10 pick-up was driving westbound. At some point, the vehicle's driver, Sabrina Yarnell, 27, had been traveling eastbound lanes before suddenly being broadsided by an eastbound Acura.

Modesto officials affirmed that the aftermath of the collision left both Yarnell and her passenger, Joaquin McKenzie, 36, trapped inside. Fire department personnel was dispatched to the scene to assist in extricating both victims from the pickup truck.

Both victims were eventually removed, however, despite life-saving measures, Sabrina Yarnell tragically was pronounced dead at the scene.

Joaquin McKenzie, 36, Seriously Injured

Meanwhile, Joaquin McKenzie sustained major injuries. He was rushed to a hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

According to authorities, the driver of the Acura, a 44-year-old woman, was uninjured and proceeded to decline treatment and transportation to a hospital.

At this time, the cause of the collision is unclear as police as the investigation in currently under review while Modesto PD attempts to piece together what happened.

5-Car Crash Investigation

A forensic examination of both, as well as photos that were taken of the scene, will help investigators determine which party ultimately caused the accident. Authorities will thoroughly look into how fast each driver was going, whether or not alcohol or drugs were involved, whether or not there were any mechanical issues with any of the involved vehicles. The investigation will also consist of looking at measurements of evidence left by the vehicles such as point of impact, final resting positions of each vehicle, skid marks, and gouge marks.

Considering that liability remains undetermined, the family of Sabrina Yarnell may be entitled to a wrongful death claim, while injured passenger, Joaquin McKenzie, is guaranteed the option to pursue a personal injury claim. Family members of wrongful death victims are entitled to compensation for funeral expenses and loss of companionship, while personal injury victims are able to collect for damages which include medical expenses and pain and suffering.
