A man was killed and another was hospitalized in critical condition after a Moreno Valley woman allegedly slammed into the back of their car while driving under the influence.

According to Riverside authorities, the accident occurred at approximately 9 p.m. at Florida Avenue and Warren Road between a Honda Civic and a Wolkswagen Jetta.

Investigations have determined two men were inside the Honda Civic traveling on Warren Road stopped for a red light at the intersection. Moments later, the driver of the Volkswagen, Faalele Patea, 25, struck the Honda from behind while traveling at approximately 100 mph.

Following the crash, one of the men inside the Honda tragically suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene upon the arrival of emergency medical personnel. The victim has been identified as Jonathan Garcia, 33, of Riverside.

Man in 20s in Critical Condition

The other man inside the Honda, who remains unidentified, was sadly significantly injured. He was rushed to a hospital in listed to be in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the Volkswagen driver, Faalele Patea, was arrested on suspicion of intoxicated driving, manslaughter, and violating parole.

Officials confirmed that Patea had been on parole as a result of a previous criminal conviction.

No additional information has been disclosed at this time.

Authorities have arrested and will hold Faalele Patea fully responsible after being confirmed to have been under the influence while operating a vehicle. Palea faces serious criminal charges which will likely keep her jailed for an extensive duration of time.

With liability being determined, the family of Jonathan Garcia will be entitled to pursuing a wrongful death lawsuit. Wrongful death family members are subject to compensation for funeral costs and loss of companionship.
