Man, 61, Fatally Struck Walking Along Highway 14
SANTA CLARITA (April 12th, 2019)
Authorities have identified a 61-year-old man, Gerald Fruichantie, as the victim fatally struck in a pedestrian versus auto collision last week on Friday.
At roughly 9:53 p.m., officials were dispatched to northbound Highway 14 near the Golden Valley Road off-ramp.
According to witnesses, Gerald Fruichantie had been walking along the northbound shoulder of Highway 14 before being struck by a passing 2002 Honda Accord being driven by a 25-year-old man of Tustin.
Fruichantie tragically did not survive the impact of the collision and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Honda remained at the scene and was determined to have not been under the influence.
No further details have been reported as the collision is under investigation.
Pedestrian Accident Investigation
In most instances, pedestrians possess the right-of-way when crossing an intersection or a street regardless if they are in a marked crosswalk. It is always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian or bicyclist, however, pedestrians must take extra caution and never assume that a motorist will stop. Authorities will continue to look further into this incident as it is likely that at least some liability will be assigned to the driver.
Considering that liability seems to have already been determined, the family of Gerald Fruichantie may be entitled to a wrongful death claim if they wish to file a lawsuit. Family members of wrongful death victims are entitled to compensation for funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and loss of companionship.
