OAKLAND (April 17, 2019) – A mother and her six-year-old son were killed and another man was seriously injured after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while the family was walking in a marked crosswalk.
The tragic incident took place on Saturday night, April 14th, at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of 26th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. The family was walking in the crosswalk when a two-door Mercedes-Benz struck them and fled the scene in a felony hit-and-run offense.
The mother, a 30-year-old woman, and the boy were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have identified the mother to be Alma Vasquez and the son as Angel Garcia.
The other victim, Angel Garcia’s uncle, 20-year-old Jeymi Garcia, 20, was transported to a hospital with critical injuries.
Police are still pursuing the suspect in the hit-and-run pedestrian accident, whose name has not been released by authorities. Police are offering $25,000 for information leading to his arrest and conviction.
The family of Alma Vasquez and Angel Garcia are entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims have the right to recovery for funeral expenses, loss of income, and loss of love and companionship.
The injured young man in this incident, Jeymi Garcia, will have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit and seek compensation for medical bills, future medical care, loss of income, and emotional trauma.
