80-Year-Old Pedestrian Man Fatally Struck
WEST SACRAMENTO (April 4, 2019)
An elderly male pedestrian suffered fatal injuries after being struck by a vehicle Thursday evening at Sacramento and Todhunter avenues.
Authorities report that the collision occurred at 5:52 p.m. roughly.
Limited details have been provided, however, the victim involved has been identified as Salvador Mejia, 80, as he was sadly pronounced at the scene.
Meanwhile the driver involved stayed at the scene and was cooperative with police officials.
Drugs nor alcohol are expected to have played a role as the Sacramento Police Department handles the investigation.
Pedestrian Accident Investigation
In most instances, pedestrians possess the right-of-way when crossing an intersection or a street regardless if they are in a marked crosswalk. It is always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian or bicyclist, however, pedestrians must take extra caution and never assume that a motorist will stop. Authorities will continue to look further into this incident as it is likely that at least some liability will be assigned to the driver.
Considering that liability seems to have already been determined, the family of Salvador Mejia will be entitled to a wrongful death claim if they wish to file a lawsuit. Family members of wrongful death victims are entitled to compensation for funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and loss of companionship.
