Deadly Collision on Highway 166 (Main Street) Saturday
SANTA MARIA (April 6, 2019)
A head-on crash on Highway 166 east of Santa Maria on Saturday resulted in the death of two people and injuries to three others.
The accident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. when a Honda Accord driven by a 29-year-old Caliente, Calif. man traveling westbound crossed over the center lane, crashing into a Nissan Sentra driven by Erica Kemp, 20, of San Luis Obispo.
The driver of the Honda and a 29-year-old female passenger in his car were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names were not released pending notification of their relatives.
Keliani Waxdeck and Mariana Silverman Hospitalized
Meanwhile, Kemp sustained minor injuries, but two of her passengers, Keliani Waxdeck, 20, and Mariana Silverman, 21, sustained serious injuries. Waxdeck was flown to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and Kemp and Silverman were taken via ambulance to Marian Regional Medical Center.
Alcohol or drugs were not suspected in the crash, but an investigation is ongoing.
Head-on Crash Investigation
Authorities have arrested and will hold the driver of the Honda fully responsible after being confirmed to have swerved his vehicle into oncoming traffic lanes. A full investigation will ensue, however, where possible factors such as speed, potential mechanical issues with the involved vehicles, distracted driving, driving under the influence, as well as many others.
With liability already been determined, Kemp, Waxdeck, and Silverman will be subject to personal injury claims.
