CHICO (April 3, 2019) – Juan Vasquez-Lopez of Atwater has been identified as the 20-year-old man that was fatally injured in a three-vehicle crash on Monday, March 25th, on Highway 99, just north of Chico.
The accident, which occurred at 12:25 p.m., when Vasquez-Lopez was driving northbound on Highway 99 in a 2009 Honda Civic and allegedly lost control of the vehicle in the area of Gaia Way.
According to the CHP, Vasquez-Lopez crossed over the solid double yellow lines into the southbound lane and collided with a 2001 Toyota 4Runner driven by Kaitlin Rist, 20, of Oroville.
Rist’s vehicle was then struck by a 2017 Dodge pick-up truck that was behind her. The Dodge was driven by Leticia Wright, of Red Bluff.

Vasquez-Lopez died on the scene.
Rist and Wright were both taken to Enloe Medical Center and treated for minor to moderate injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities will look into road conditions and whether a mechanical error may have contributed to the cause.
