DUI Driver Struck and Tragically Kills CHP Sergeant Steve Licon

Steve Licon dead dui car crashLAKE ELSINORE (April 7, 2019) -A Winchester man was arrested on suspicion of murder after police say he rammed into a California Highway Patrol motorcycle causing the death of a 28-year veteran of the force on the 15 Freeway in Lake Elsinore late Saturday afternoon, April 6th.

Sgt. Steve Licon, a father of two, was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Licon had pulled over a vehicle and was on the shoulder around 4:30 p.m. when a black sedan driven by Michael Callahan, 36, of Winchester, struck the motorcycle and vehicle, according to a report in The Mercury News. Callahan was arrested on suspicion of murder and other charges, including driving under the influence.

The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office will decide specifically what to charge Callahan with, according to the newspaper.

Two others inside the vehicle being pulled over were injured in the accident. Their conditions had yet to be reported.

Law enforcement officers and medical personnel from several agencies met outside Inland Valley Regional Medical Center in Wildomar to honor Licon as his body was transported to the Riverside County Coroner’s office in Perris. Residents joined officials in lining the roads for the procession.
