COSTA MESA (April 4, 2019) – A woman was struck and killed after getting out of her car during a series of chain-reaction traffic crashes on Wednesday morning on the northbound 405 Freeway in Costa Mesa.
Altagracia Cruz Penaloza, 42, a Tustin resident, sadly suffered fatal injuries after being hit.
Her 18-year-old daughter, a passenger in her vehicle, was not injured.
Cruz Penaloza’s Toyota Corolla and an Audi were involved in a rear-end collision at 5 a.m. on the freeway. A Chevrolet Impala and a Toyota Prius were also involved in the collision. The collisions began with a minor crash between two vehicles traveling north near Harbor Boulevard at about 5 a.m.
Cruz Penaloza exited her Toyota Corolla, getting out while still in traffic lanes, the CHP said.
Suddenly, an Audi SUV struck the vehicle behind the Cruz Penaloza’s, which then pushed the Corolla to the right and causing a collision with a Chevrolet Impala.
The Impala ended up on the Harbor Boulevard off-ramp, where it was hit by a Toyota Prius, the CHP said.
Police will continue to investigate the facts of the accident and an official report will be released.
